Tom Thompson, Phar Lap specialist, is putting together regular Australian Racing items for auction under the Gumquest banner, with the first one in November 2006 to feature Phar Lap racing plates, original racing photographs, Carbine mementoes, and Lord Fury's 1961 Melbourne Cup and racing silks (pictured left).

 He has already researched and sold Jim Pike's saddles, bridles, skullcap and whip for Phar Lap - A racing blouse worn by Pike & Billy Elliot on Phar Lap & Phar Lap's front foot racing plate.

The Melbourne Cup for 1961, as won by Lord Fury. Original Drummond & Company hand beaten gold cup with three handles (making a total of 32 oz of gold) engraved thus: 'MELBOURNE CUP/1961/Won by/Mr & Mrs N.S.Cohen's/LORD FURY/Edwards11 - Sea Ruffle/Trainer F.B. Lewis/Ridden by Ray Selkrig/Time 3'191/2"/Equals Australian and Race Record'. With the change to metric, Lord Fury's record cannot be beaten. On a hand-turned base of Queensland maple, in its original presentation box of plus blue velvet. For sale by private treaty.

Lot 74, the racing blouse worn by Jim Pike & Billy Elliot when riding Phar Lap in 1929 and 1930 was sold by Cromwell’s for $67,700 (including buyer’s premium) on Saturday October 22.

Lot 63, Pike’s saddle as raced on Phar Lap in the 1930 Melbourne Cup sold for $43,600.
